Toronto – Immigration

Immigration issues related to Canada are handled by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada offices (IRCC). Established in 1994, these offices are responsible for dealing with all matters related to immigration into Canada as well as the confirmation of Canadian citizenship. This includes all matters related to those looking to apply and achieve permanent or temporary residency and citizenship into Canada.

In order to become a Canadian citizen, you must first be a permanent resident. Upon approval of permeant residency, one must then have lived in the country of Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years and prove filing of all required taxes. Finally, a citizenship test is required as is a language skills test. Spouses of Canadian citizens do not automatically become a citizen of Canada throughout marriage; the same requirements are required for spouses wishing to become a citizen of the country.

Permanent residents of Canada are granted the right to live, work and study anywhere in Canada. This is separate from temporary citizens, such as foreign workers and students. A separate application must be processed to confirm permanent residency.

The IRCC has offices available throughout Canada to handle all immigration related enquiries. The city of Toronto maintains two office locations, however all visitation is currently available via appointment only. Online appointments can be made via the official government website below. These offices handle enquiries related to citizenship, permanent residency and refugee claims and appointment.
