Vancouver – Architecture & Landmarks

A combination of architectural styles ranging from Edwardian to 21st century modernist, Vancouver has embraced a wide range of design styles and themes in its development. Post-World War I saw the city embrace a West Coast contemporary style, where building constraints required innovative ideas and designs to make construction possible. Many of the cities more modern buildings have implemented more complex and geometric shapes into their layouts, as well as glass which allows for natural light. Residential styles in the city include American Craftsman, California bungalow and dingbat styles of architecture.

As a city surrounded by natural beauty, Vancouver has always worked to incorporate the elements of nature into master planning. For example, the city’s Seawall is a man-made pathway that operates both as a safety mechanism against flooding as well as a residential path open to all but vehicular traffic. Many of the structures within the city have incorporated natural elements, using them as part of the aesthetic instead of removing them from the planning altogether.

Many of the city’s landmarks are a direct result of Vancouver’s varied population. With significant immigration having helped build the city’s population, including a large portion of immigration from China, the city is rich with monuments, structures and buildings that incorporate Chinese and other Asian architecture. The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is an example of this. The garden, located in Chinatown, is the first ‘scholars’ garden built outside of China and is an integral part of the local community. Various neighborhoods offer other unique layouts and structures, such as that of Gastown which is known as a trendy location with edgy fashion studios and famous for its Victorian-era buildings and architecture.
